There's a little forest within sight of the Island Highway in Chemainus that the District of North Cowichan is set on developing, despite the fact that most people in the community want it preserved. When a Penelakut First Nation elder visited and saw all the rare medicinal plants, he asked, "Why are you going to cut down our pharmacy?".

Others have asked similar questions - from ethnobotanist Dr Nancy Turner to UVic's Dr Kelly Bannister, head of the Polis Project who helped set up the Chemainus Biodiversity Education Project last year.
